Governor’s Forum (Toledo) Remarks

Remarks and observations by Alvin Stepehens:

As with the other forums throughout the state Governor Strickland discussed his mission and core principles followed by comments from the attendees.  I enjoyed the format where he was not looking for questions for him to address, but for statements as to how to better address these issues. In turn, calling on the expertise of those attending to give him information that would help reform education in Ohio.

I was not able to speak, but a member from Action for Healthy Kids, Jan Meyer, was able to address nutritional issues, but due to the limited time did not have an opportunity to address fitness and activity.

When we broke into small groups to develop our 3 top strategies and to report out on our top strategy, the development of Coordinated School Health Programs was the over whelming favorite of the group and it was well received by the other groups as we explain the benefit of how such a program would impact all areas of student achievement.

Over all I believe it was a worthwhile endeavor as long as those in Columbus really take the time to study the comments made.
